Apple iOS App Review: Bruce

Welcome to Bruce’s world! Bruce is a cute little turtle who loves cabbage! One day while playing with one of his cabbages, he accidentally knocked it off the edge of a cliff. Distraught and worried for the cabbage, Bruce peered over the edge to discover a vast amount of cabbages scattered between the walls of two mountains! Delighted at the sight, Bruce immediately jumped down after the cabbages without any fear! Can you help him harvest as many cabbages as you can before the clock reaches zero?

Bruce is a simple pick-up-and-play style game for all ages. With simple gameplay, short rounds, richly colored 3D graphics, loads of collectible hats, and new, randomly generated levels each day, not to mention it’s a tremendous value, Bruce is sure to offer hours upon hours of replay value!

Enough of all of the intro, gibberish. I divided this review into 4 categories. They are Sounds, Controls, Graphics and Gameplay. Lets get started with this review.

Sounds:

The sounds in this App are very well done. The music in the beginning of the game follows throughout the entire game. It is a very catchy tune, and definitely is not distracting from the overall gameplay. The sounds within the game, for instance when you hit a head of cabbage, or a stinky cheese, are very well done as well. I also appreciate the fact that I can mute the sounds from within the game rather than turning the sound off of my iPhone.

The sounds and music are not perfect, but very well done. For this reason I give this category 4 out of 5 stars.

Controls:

The controls in this game are fantastic. In order to control where Bruce goes, you either use the tilting function or arrows appear on the screen and you can direct Bruce that way. Both of these options are excellent, however using the tilting function, I found, to be a lot more effective and more amusing. The arrows are sort of large, and can become intrusive while playing the game.

Even though there are some cons with the controls, the tilting functionality is highly responsive, thus allowing me to award this category a perfect 5 out of 5 rating.

Graphics:

The graphics in this App are actually somewhat impressive. For such a simple concept, the developers definitely utilized the brilliant screen the iPhone has to offer for a gaming experience. There are some moments while playing the game that I was blown away and others where I felt sort of cheated out since the graphics were sub-par. Overall the graphics are decent for the type of game this App thats made to become. I give this category a 4 out of 5 rating.

Gameplay:

Bruce, definitely held my attention and interest for longer than I had expected. I definitely found myself trying to beat my high score, and finding different ways to control Bruce around the game. Another great feature of this App is how there is unlockable content you receive for certain achievements you attain within the game. The fact that there were achievements within the game added to that addicting, must-play mentality. The only downside was, once I unlocked everything possible the fun-factor died down quite dramatically.

Due to the fun-factor deteriorating rapidly, I give this category a 4.5 out of 5 rating.

After I add up all the final scores, and divide by 4, this game receives a 4.4 out of 5 rating. Bruce is definitely a game that everyone should play at least once. More information about the App and downloading information can be found here.
