Gotham City Impostors Review

I want to get one thing straight right off the bat here, there will be some gamers out there who expect Warner Bros have simply put this game out there because they could.  As a cash cow to milk even more from the success of the recent Batman Games.  Well, I’m here to tell you that this simply is not the case here.  Gotham City Impostors is a spin off story yes, but a bloody fantastic one!  It has its own unique story line and was obviously born from a lot of hard work and awesome game development.  That and of course the opening scene of The Dark Knight “I’m not wearing hockey pants” I think was a bit of a starting point for this shooter.

Gotham City Impostors is the equivalent of a kid in a candy store, who has found his mom’s credit card and is high on PCP.  Its fun, energetic, doesn’t quit and is totally insane.  The sound track, game play and artwork are all focused and geared towards good old entertaining fun.  The game doesn’t take itself too seriously and why should it, thats not what its about.  I have a lot of time for games that know what they are and are trying to be and don’t pull any punches or try to be something its not.  Gotham City Impostors is a download only, online only multiplayer game.  Its designed in almost every aspect to keep you playing and wanting more and it achieves this extremely well.  Everything in game (regarding your character) is completely customizable, right down to your characters tighty whiteys.  Much like in the setup of Blackops you are able to change your characters costume, face paint, even gloves and shoes as well as your weapon loadout.  Each part of the customization must me unlocked in game (or bought with PSN/XBL points).  There are also other options given to you to personalize the game that much more.  These are your personal calling cards which are displayed to the players you blow away, you have the option to join in game gangs (think clans) and so on.  This obviously adds to the competitiveness and longevity of the the overall game.  The initial feel of the game is very comic book style, from the first menu screens to the helpful hints which come to you in a speech bubble throughout the loading screens.

All in keeping with the pure multiplayer and competitive game play aspect of the game, the developers really went to town in giving you more than a few options to track your play.  You can literally keep track of everything you could possibly imagine during game play, including who can pee the farthest… OK I made that last part up but there is an update coming in soon which may include that.  Your gaming track record is split up between Lifetime, Community, Weapons, basic, gadgets, Support items, body types, rampage, Psych profiles and game modes.  So from that it should be pretty clear that the game is designed to be as addictive as possible.  Everything has to be unlocked, even the game tracking systems.  You will receive messages from the cartoon batman character in between maps, the messages are always relevant to where you are in the game.  It lets you know what unlock is coming up next and yes it simply keeps you playing that little bit longer.  Even your kill streak is kept on screen as you go, again adding more competitive sauce to the game.   Thats a big win for me, I found myself constantly wanting more.  It was always ‘oh just one more game’ but it was never just the one more game.  I havent been so hooked so quickly on an online shooter since Modern Warfare 2.  At the end of each round the top three players are displayed in a ‘Usual suspects’ style police line up.  Their points and of course costume in all its glory are displayed to all.  This is of course a big hit for anyone who like their gaming ego to be rubbed the right way from time to time.  The game modes available to you are Team Death Match (if you don’t know what that is by now you need to give that kid down the road your console and to be honest, take a long walk off a short plank.  You know what I’m saying?), Capture Gasblaster (basically a capture the flag situation just more fun), Psych warfare (similar to a game mode in Killzone 3 where the opposing team run around the map with a propaganda speaker), challenges (many in game challenges to complete) and finally initiations which is basically a how to guide to the different weapons and gadgets in the game.

For a download only multiplayer exclusive game Gotham City Impostors is huge, seriously this game was a welcome surprise.  There is always plenty to do or to unlock in this shooter.  Another great feature are the ingame costume coins you earn through XP, these coins can be spent redesigning your character.  Both your Batman and Joker gang member character will need to be updated separably.  The more coins you save up the better the outfits (or at least the more comedic) will be.  Don’t forget that the game is based around a bunch of vigilantes either on the side of batman or the joker, all of whom make home made weapons and armor.  Although this is thoroughly entertaining and funny as shit don’t expect any fancy Dark Knight gadgets.  More like soda bottles full of gasoline fired from a makeshift rocket launcher.  These home made items include such fantastic items as the cardboard Bat mask, the hubcap chest shield, the windup grapple gun and so on.

The points system during the game is particularly genius, the normal rules apply such as points for a kill and the soul destroying assist.  But rather than only earning points when you actually get a kill or help a team mate get a kill (or rather your filthy team mate stole your kill) you are awarded points for every shot that hits its target.  So if like me you are a panic shooter who normally takes out his foes by shooting them in the feet than this scoring system is right up your street.  Gotham City Impostors game-play is very close to the call of duty games, particularly Black ops.  Gotham City Impostors is what Black Ops would be after a nice big cup of crazy!  GCI doesn’t have the classic kill cam however it does zoom in on the player who just off’d you.  In this semi cut scene you are given a chosen one liner which are fully awesome “prepare to be man handled by justice”.

Gotham City Impostors isn’t the most graphically impressive game I have ever played and to be honest it doesn’t need to be!  With game play this enjoyable, competitive and addictive who cares.   I will trade that for graphics any day.  The game is fantastically cheesy on purpose, which is awesome.  The game knows what it wants to be and simply does it, doesn’t pull any punches just delivers.  It features classic video game features such as trampolines to jump across the map, first aid and ammo dumps littered around the map and the good old hot air vent to make you fly.  The game is centered around a very important aspect of gaming, FUN!  GCI delivers this by the truck load.  This game is fully addictive fun on your own but get a few buddies online too and say good bye to your weekend!

Gotham City Impostors is a fantastic shooter by any standard, everything the online gamer wants it has.  You wont be able to put this one down, the value for money alone is just phenomenal.  Get yourselves to PSN or XBL NOW and get yourself a copy, you wont regret it.  The game developers want to look after their gamers too, for this reason a planned FREE dlc will drop in March.  This will include;

A new map, the “25th Floor”
Over 100 new customisation options, such as new weapons, support items, fully themed costume packs and Calling Card elements
More matchmaking improvements
Join-in-Progress: Players will be able to join a match, even after it has started
Numerous additional fixes to resolve potential connection errors

I’ll be looking forward to that and so should you you, see you all in crime alley.
