Resident Evil first released on March 22, 1996. It was created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara and owned by Capcom, and it shaped the scene of survival horror for years. Many titles and a couple of decades later they added the remastered version of the original to the Xbox Game Pass. This titles standard price is 19.99 and is included in Xbox Game Pass for just $9.99 a month for the monthly subscription price of Xbox Game Pass.
As a player of the original Resident Evil this game is a nostalgia overload, with its updated graphics the opening scene instantly sent me down memory lane. The S.T.A.R.S. team is sent to investigate the disappearance of fellow team members on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Attacks had been reported on people by groups of ten or more, and it gets them chased into a mansion by a group of crazed dogs. You can either play as Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine members of the S.T.A.R.S. team and it doesn’t take long after entering the mansion that you get a nightmarish cut scene with a zombie eating someone else, setting the stage for the rest of the game.
This single player game is rated M for violence and gore and focuses on a third person style of gameplay. The harsh camera angles that keep you guessing where the next zombie is going to pop out from, will keep you in a constant state of fear. Your inventory space is limited and really makes you think about your resource management. Ammo is scarce and punishing if you try to kill everything you run across. This forces you to think about every shot you take and wonder if you can just chance running around the zombies instead.
Overall I would rank this game a solid 8/10 easily for fans of bone chilling survival horror games. This game isn’t a family friendly title but for adults this is a true masterpiece and a completely amazing addition to the Xbox Game Pass. Games like this is what can truly make the Xbox Game Pass an amazing value that can truly made it hard for me to sleep at night!
